President
Ellen Weinberg is currently in her third year at Northeastern University but has enough credits
to be considered a senior. She has a double major in Secondary Education and English, she switched minors from Spanish
to Linguistics so that she will have the flexibility to teach ESL. She is involved with the University Honors Program
and hopes to join other clubs this year. This is Ellen's second year holding an office with the FTC, and she
has been a member since she was a Freshman.
Ellen would love to teach either
middle school or high school English. She is interested in middle school material, but enjoys being in a high school
environment. If she continues to live in Evanston then her dream is to teach where she went to school or for
CPS. In May of 2007 she will be graduating and getting married so hopefully she will be teaching on an Air
Force Base where her fiance will be stationed. She would be interested in teaching ESL in another country or teaching
in a challenging environment such as a military base.
Ellen also is a swim instructor
and lifeguard at the Mayer Kaplan JCC in Skokie. She adores working with the children there! When Ellen isn't at school or at work, she is
spending time with friends and family. She loves to swim, sail, kayak, sing, dance, play the flute and enjoy life!

Ex-Officio Edward
Torgerson is seeking his second bachelor's degree at Northeastern and has completed the coursework
for a minor in biology. He is currently working on his mathematics endorsement and elementary methods coursework with
the goal of teaching fourth through eighth grades. He was awarded a B.A in Music Composition by DePaul University in 1991.
He worked as a music recording engineer in advertising and record production in Chicago and Los Angeles before working in
outdoor recreational equipment sales and management. Edward has also attended UIC, Oakton Com. Col. (where he was Phi
Theta Kappa honor society), and Harper Com. Col. before coming to NEIU.
His decision to enter the teaching
profession was made after many public presentation experiences in which he found an affinity for sharing knowledge and communicating
with children. His volunteer experiences in public schools have reaffirmed his desire to enter the profession.
Edward
enjoys playing in a local community orchestra, a far cry from the garage bands he played in as a teen. A former triathlete
and USCF track bicycle racer, he enjoys sea-kayaking, bicycle touring, skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking. Having traveled on
several continents, he finds Chicago to be one of the best places to live!
